Eight-Week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) - Mindfulness Meditation Class

The eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) classes are modeled after the world renowned Stress Reduction and Relaxation Program founded by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 at University of Massachusetts Medical Center (UMMC). The Stress Reduction Clinic at UMMC is the oldest and largest stress reduction clinic in the world. Today Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction/Mindfulness Meditation is taught in over 200 clinics and hospitals around the world.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction classes are held in Houston, Texas and consist of 8 weekly sessions, each lasting 2 1/2 hours. In addition to practicing mindfulness meditation, the class provides support for participants in fostering a daily meditation practice, and discussion about how to integrate mindfulness into various aspects of every-day life.  There is a day-long silent retreat in the sixth week of the class to help participants deepen their meditation practice.

Some topics of class discussion are:

  • Living life more fully and with more appreciation through mindfulness
  • Identifying habitual and reactive ways of handling stress and developing creative alternatives
  • Development of acceptance, and compassion in one's life
  • Use of mindfulness to foster resourceful attitudes and beliefs
  • Use of mindfulness to process emotions with compassion and acceptance
  • Mindfulness and communication
  • Mindfulness and eating, as well as other types of consumption

Mindfulness is best understood through its practice. To benefit, participants are asked to commit themselves to practice mindfulness meditation from 45 to 60 minutes per day. Participants are coached to work with this commitment with gentleness and patience.
